Subject: #2467: Trophy or Tempest

Submitted by Jonathan Phillips (152.1.73.34) from NORTH CAROLINA on 8/24/04 3:21:33 pm:

I've read almost every post and your web site to prevent asking a repeat question but I just can't find my answer. Please forgive me if I'm asking you to repeat yourself.

I've got a 2000 Nitro 188 Fish and ski with a 150XR6 large gear case, Laser II 23P, 5600 RPMs at WOT. 57mph GPS, No jack plate, Water pump guage in middle. Air temp 80-90.

I think I want either a trophy or Tempest. I'm willing to give up 2-3 MPH if I don't have to death grip the wheel. Not willing to give up 10mph for minor handling improvment.

1) Should I keep the same pitch?

2) Is the trophy a lot slower then the tempest?

3) Is the trophy that much less wheel torq?

4) I read somewhere that the trophy came in both small and large hub. Is this true?

5) When buying used is there a criticle year that the shapes changed? Is a 2004 the same shape as a 1994?

I've only got one shot at getting a prop $$$$ so I've got to be right the first time. Everybody says your the person to ask. Please help.

I forgot one bit of info, and it is the whole reason I'm in this mess. The motor has a 2:1 gear ratio, NOT 1.87:1. I bought it in Salt Lake City and it was set up for high altitutde. It has been jetted to low altitude since I'm at sea level.

Learn from my mistake buying a boat in the Rocky mountains. Ask about the jets, and gear ratio. You'll spend more money then you saved on the "good deal".

Never mind. I found an awesome boat store that let me try both so I didn't have to guess. It cost me more to buy them their but was worth it for the experience.

FYI: I found that the 23P Laser,23P Tempest, and 24P Trophy all ran with in 1mph GPS. Tempest handleed much better then Laser, Trophy better then that. Tempest gave feeling of tight responsive steering. Trophy was like a cadalic. Kinda wandered around but smooth steering. trophy took forever to get on to plane. I've close off hoels and I'm going to buy a ring today and re test. I decided on the trophy. Just as fast as the tempest but was smoother so the wife and kid can dirve the boat better.

with power streeing (Hydraulic) and if it is and you are having control problems it needs some repair.
